Congressional District Map Advances to the Senate

HARRISBURG – A proposed congressional district map was passed by the Senate State Government Committee today, according to Senator David G. Argall (R-Berks/Schuylkill), who chairs the committee.  Additional amendments are expected.

“Bipartisan negotiations are continuing in the hopes that a compromise can be reached,” said Senator Argall.

“It is important to continue to move this bill through the legislative process to meet the deadlines set by the Department of State, in order to avoid delaying the primary election,” Argall continued.  “Because of these deadlines and our constitutional mandate that all bills must be considered for three days in each chamber of the General Assembly, we needed to move this bill out of our committee today.

“I also plan to hold an additional public hearing on this subject later this week.  This will be the fourteenth public hearing on congressional redistricting during this legislative session of the House and the Senate.”

The map considered by the committee today, which was introduced as House Bill 2146, was passed by the House of Representatives last week.  It was originally drafted by Lehigh County citizen advocate Amanda Holt.
